Enjoying the cool breeze knocking at your doors, informing you of the arrival of winter? Hopefully, you are! But this enjoyment could turn around because of joint pain. You may wonder why sudden joint pain starts troubling you, especially during winter. If you are, then continue reading to know all about Joint Pain!
What counts as Joint Pain?
Any joint discomfort arising in the hands, feet, hips, knees, or spine may count as Joint Pain. This pain is usually constant but it may also come and go. During this phase, the joint may even feel stiff or sore, or there can be a ‘burning’ or ‘throbbing’ sensation.
In many cases, the joint feels stiffer in the morning but as the activity increases, it may loosen up! But remember, too much activity may also make the condition worse!
Be more cautious, if you are:
- Someone who had previous injuries
- Using or overusing any muscle
- Already diagnosed with Arthritis or other medical conditions
- Suffering from depression, anxiety, or stress
- Overweight
- Having a poor health
Age also plays a big role in joint pains because, after years of use, the joints may show signs of wear and tear. Thus, causing problems for middle-aged and old people!
Why Do Joint Pains Become More Common During Winter?
Joint Pains become more prominent during the winter season- and you must have experienced this too! There are many reasons behind this sudden rise in pain or at times the revival of some dormant pain. Joint Pain can increase if you run regularly, or spending more time exercising in the cold. This would put more pressure on the joints bearing weight. But due to the cold weather, the blood vessels constrict, restricting blood flow to the joints.
There also exist a variety of other theories that point toward increased pain in the lower joints like the hips, knees, and ankles. However, no concrete evidence can be traced. People with arthritis, however, tend to have a greater risk of experiencing joint pain during the winter. The atmospheric pressure and the weight of the air are also assumed to be responsible for this!
Sometimes even the softer tissues swell up to apply more pressure on the joints nearby, causing stiffness and pain in winter!
Ways To Tackle The Joint Pain
Anyone suffering from joint pain would understand how exhausting it becomes in the cold weather. No proper cure lies, but there are many ways through which the patient can get some relief. Sometimes simple daily exercises and home remedies may do the job, but sometimes they may not!
- Exercise- This can help in getting back the strength and functionality of the joint. Simple exercises like walking, or swimming may even do the job. However, people doing strenuous exercises must also cut some slack to relieve themselves from the pain. Gentle stretching can also be done.
- Home Remedy- Certain home treatments like heating pads or applying an ice pack on the area may also give some relief.
- Weight- Monitoring and managing weight can be very effective in lessening the strain on the joints.
- Anti-Inflammatory Drugs- In case of much pain, anti-inflammatory drugs could be consumed upon a doctor’s prescription.
- Diet- Well-balanced food, and getting all the nutrients could also better the pain. In some instances, dietary supplements are also advised to fulfill the nutrient requirement of the body.
In case the pain appears at a time when it is difficult to do any immediate remedies, applying some gels or oils could be good. If the pain lasts longer, it is most advisable to consult a doctor and get the joints checked. This would help in managing your overall health!
